The Story of Overboard Art

Overboard Art was founded in 1958 when Don started carving decoys. Don incorporated Overboard Art in 1985 when the demand for Don Briddell's original wild bird woodcarvings exceeded his ability to produce. In searching for a way to reproduce the work, it became apparent that the sculpture resins and high definition molding techniques available, would not only make exact reproductions, but could be made at a price attractive to a wider range of collector.Arising from the decoy and bird carving traditions of the Chesapeake Bay, Don ensures that Overboard Art's mission to faithfully document the beauty of the moment and timeless passage of nature in the American sense is maintained.

Don sculpts the original in wood or clay. A mold is made from which castings are made. The raw castings are prepared for the painters using a process called fettling. Artists use hand brushwork painting techniques and acrylic waterproof paints to complete the piece. The paint is the same type used to paint decoys that are designed to be thrown overboard.Permanent sculpting materials are used to ensure the piece will last through time. Many steps are needed to create the seamless and blended finished effect. Assembling the sculpture requires further sculpting and touchup painting. The making of Overboard Art's sculptures is an involved process requiring many steps.

All creation and design work originates in the Maryland Studio, as well as production of limited editions. Open editions, produced under the World Label, receive supervision by Don who personally trains and works with the artists. The sculpture materials used by Overboard Art are of the highest quality and with normal care, will provide you with a lifetime of enjoyment.
