Woodpeckers use their beaks to hammer into trees in search of juicy insects. If you are walking in a forest with a woodpecker in it, you will hear its loud tapping sound. The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker species found in woods nationwide, with distinctive red, black and white markings. Downy Woodpeckers are often around human habitation, pecking away at trees, only shying away from the observer by staying on the back side of a tree.
