Woodpeckers
Woodpecker Art, Figurines, and Collectibles from Overboard Art Studios
Woodpeckers use their beaks to hammer into trees in search of juicy insects. If you are walking in a forest with a woodpecker in it, you will hear its loud tapping sound. Woodpeckers also will feed in the backyard birdfeeder, their arrival sending the smaller birds into a flurry. Visually they have very distinct markings, often red on their head and black and white checkered bodies. The Red-Bellied Woodpecker, which actually has a red crested head, is a large bird that is found west of the Rockies from southern Minnesota and New York all the way to Mexico. The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker species found in woods nationwide, with distinctive red, black and white markings. Downy Woodpeckers are often around human habitation, pecking away at trees, only shying away from the observer by staying on the back side of a tree.
